Gun Free School Zone?

I was taking a picture of the outside of my son's school. I saw afterward this sign that I have never noticed before: Gun Free School Zone. Okay I know parts of Texas (especially in big cities) can be rough but guns in the elementary level? Maybe it was left from the wild west days.
I won't worry about this sign until they install metal detectors for the kids to pass through.
