Flag Burning

Why do Muslims always burn flags? I do not understand that at all. It is so weird to me to see a burning Denmark flag. Denmark is such a harmless little country with rich culture and interesting people. However, they dared to make a cartoon that mocked religion and now they must pay with flag burnings and threats of kidnapping/hostage taking. I wonder how a muslim nation would react if Denmark or any other country for that fact burned one of their flags. Is that like the ultimate insult? I don't mean to make light of their anguish but it is like the only religion in the world that responds first with a flag burning ceremony. As a Christian, when someone mocks Jesus I just do not support that company/person/product/country anymore. Why make threats? Why get violent? I know it is a stupid questions since the beginning of time wars have been fought over religion.

Well, for what it's worth, Muslims here in Denmark are a very marginalized group. Danes claim not to be racist, but they often are, and the most anti-immigrant (which here means anti-Muslim immigrant in most cases) have a lot of political power. For just one well-publicized example, a member of the Danish People's Party (idiots all of them, but the 3rd largest political party in the country, and a support party for the current government) referred to Muslims in Denmark as cancer cells which would destroy the fabric of Danish society. And it is this type of person who sets policy here. So, I can't agree that Denmark is at all harmless.

This issue is very difficult for me to come to terms with...for me, freedom of expression is exceedingly important. However, of all the issues which could have been used as a test case, given the situation in Europe in general, and Denmark in particular, Jyllands-Posten picked the very worst one.

I think for me, I have always supported freedom of speech. I am very good at turning the other cheek but forget that others in the world are not. I get mad at what politicians and public figures say all the time but divert my anger in other directions in the form of non-support. I knew Denmark was very anti-immigrant. I wonder how this will all play out. What is the reaction within the country, Kim?

Interesting, as I have now gotten the same question from multiple sources. I would say that Danes are just sick of hearing about it, as it's been at or near the top of the news headlines since September. First the cartoons, then the reaction to them, then diplomatic visits, then boycotts, then should the government apologize, should they apologize more, why they won't apologize. It's been the main subject of conversation for seemingly forever. Then the other European newspapers printing it...the sense was that, on the one hand it would take the pressure off of Denmark, but on the other hand, how stupid and needlessly provacative can you be? And now it's clearly gone global. I am curious to see how it continues to develop, but also extremely sick of hearing about it!

I agree with you in terms of "just ignore it, dudes", but I saw the cartoons--or at least what were apparently the cartoons because the ones I saw were all in English, and are Danish cartoons done in English? For a religion that expressly forbids any visual representation of their prophet, I winced a little. There are plenty of other things to draw political cartoons about, why this?
